New York City's own Tchotchke is back with a brand new album, Playin' Dumb. Out September 5, this is the group's first album since 2022, and is the follow-up to their self-titled debut album. Tchotchke has also revealed that fellow 60s lovers The Lemon Twigs will be producing the album.

Back in May, the group cheekily dropped the first single "Did You Hear?" without announcing the record. Now, the band has revealed their brand new song "Poor Girl" and dropped a retro collage filled music video for the track. Watch:

"Poor Girl" is a tongue-in-cheek song about spoiled little girls. In the video, the girls play dress up go all out. Emily Tooraen, the group's guitarist, explains:

“We confined ourselves to creating the personas of three ungrateful and out-of-touch girls with complete stories in the span of four lines each. The challenge was emphasizing the fact that these girls were not ‘poor’ in the slightest but, in fact, very privileged to have the self-imposed problems they’re so tortured over. The song embraces the girls’ short sob stories while also capturing a sunshiney, Beach Boys quality. It wasn’t until after the completion of the song, to our collective shock, that we realized our counterparts had effortlessly cast themselves. All along, we were creating the villain versions of each other.”

Tchotchke showed up to the studio with the tracks fully arranged and demoed and ready to be produced. The album was recorded over four seasons due to scheduling conflicts with The Lemon Twigs (as they were on tour). They recorded it at the Brooklyn studio The Vegetable Attic, which got its name from being above a vegetable warehouse. The bands would get back to the studio whenever they had a chance and would work until they were sweated out.

The vinyl release of the album comes with a tabletop board game designed by bandmember Eva Chambers. It's got gossip, girltalk, and truth or dare prompts relating to the album.
