Canadian Inuk singer, songwriter, composer, and throat singer Tanya Tagaq is back with a brand new album. Saputjiji, out March 6 via Six Shooter, follows up the Polaris Prize-winner's 2022 effort, Tongues.
Along with the news comes first single "Foxtrot", which you can listen to below:
The title of the record translates to "designated protector." Tagaq had this to say about the name:
"Saputjiji. Designated protector. We must stand. We must protect her. The world is choking on the rancid smoke of capitalism. We must breathe. You are being feasted upon. Time to embrace carnivorous tendencies. Defend, protect, embrace."
The album – which is produced by Gonjasufi and Jean Martin, and features Fucked Up's Damian Abraham – will also see a second permutation in the form of a stage production entitled Split Tooth: Saputjiji, which borrows the name from her debut novel, Split Tooth, which came out in 2018.
Recently, Tagaq has been seen on screen, acting in the series True Detecive: Night Country and North of North.
