On Saturday, 7 December, Taking Back Sunday got longtime fans in their feelings when, during a show at Starland Ballroom, they brought out former singer and guitarist Fred Mascherino to perform two songs.
Playing a set as part of the band's Holiday Spectacular, Taking Back Sunday invited their former guitar player to partake in two of the premiere tracks from 2006 album Louder Now, including "Liar (It Takes One to Know One)" and "MakeDamnSure" as the fans went wild.
Performing with one of John Nolan's telecasters instead of his signature red Gibson SG, Fred sounded fantastic performing the parts he originated in 2006, with his signature yelp fitting perfectly with Adam Lazarra's emo wail on "Liar."
The performance of "MakeDamnSure," interestingly enough, also featured original guitar player Nolan on the stage alongside the man he replaced, with the Straylight Run singer taking backup vocals on the song while Mascherino rocked out on the Telecaster and vice versa.
Will Taking Back Sunday become a four-piece once more, adding a second full-time guitarist for the first time since founding member Eddie Reyes left the band in 2018 and a fourth full-time member since Mark O'Connell seemingly left the band in 2024? Probably not, as this was more of a one-off celebration than a soft relaunch. But then again, in 2024, legacy bands have done stranger things than adding a former member 17 years after his exit, so you can never really say never, either.
