Suzanne Vega returns with 10th studio album, shares new single "Speakers' Corner"

Acclaimed folk singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega is back with Flying With Angels, a brand new LP, due for release on May 2 via Cooking Vinyl. This will be Vega's first album of new songs not based on other material since 2014's Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles. (2020's Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers featured ten songs inspired by McCullers' writing, and were co-written with Duncan Sheik and Michael Jefry Stevens.)

The has also shared a brand new single in the form of "Speakers' Corner", which was directed/animated by Michael Arthur. Listen and watch below:

Vega says the new song was inspired by the way social media has led to people speaking their minds with somewhat wild abandon, sometimes abusing that power. She goes on:

"That’s something you don’t want in democracy: the shutting down of the Speakers’ Corner where people get a say. This is a moment in time when people are saying a lot, but sometimes they’re not making sense or not telling the truth. People should be accountable for what they say. They can’t just lie. One would think that that would be self-evident."

Flying With Angels, which includes previously-shared single "Rats", was produced with Gerry Leonard, Vega's longtime guitarist and collaborator. Vega says "Each song on the album takes place in an atmosphere of struggle ... Struggle to survive, to speak, to dominate, to win, to escape, to help someone else, or just live."

To celebrate, the Vega will be heading out on a "career-spanning" tour across North America and Europe, with newly-announced shows including New York's Town Hall and Three Rivers Arts Fest in Pittsburgh.
