Post-metal supergroup SUMAC have joined force with spoken word/avant-jazz poet and songwriter Moor Mother for a brand new collaborative album. The Film, out April 25 via Thrill Jockey, is the first time the two parties have worked together on a project, and promises to mix SUMAC's airy and distorted soundscapes with Moor Mother's signature, dynamic poetic and vocal approach.
Listen to the first single, "Scene 1", below:
Moor Mother (aka Camae Ayewa) was last heard on her 2024 opus, The Great Bailout, and while she hasn't collaborated with SUMAC before, she is no stranger to partnering up with various musical folks. She's done work with free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements, as well as with people like DJ Haram, The Bug, and Sons of Kemet, just to name a few.
SUMAC, for their part, also released a well-received record last with year The Healer, and have worked multiple times with Japanese imrovisational artist Keiji Haino.
The band's trio of Aaron Turner, Brian Cook, and Nick Yacyshyn crafted the sounds and compositions, which were then turned over to Ayewa to write and perform over, all engineered by Scott Evans.
The band will also be going on a short European tour this April, which includes two collaborative sets with Moor Mother. Check those dates below.
