Stranger Things, the wildly popular and eerie Netflix series, is no stranger to using classic rock and metal in its soundtrack. Previous seasons gave major streaming boosts to Kate Bush’s 1985 “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” and Metallica’s 1986 “Master of Puppets”.
Now, the trailer for the long-awaited fifth and final season taps into British rock legends Deep Purple and their 1970 anthem “Child in Time”.
“Master of Puppets” was featured in the Stranger Things season four finale, and before the episode aired, it had on-demand streaming numbers of 1,020,333. Just six days later, that number skyrocketed to 7,655,536, according to Billboard Charts, which is a massive jump by any metric. Deep Purple’s “Child in Time” currently sits just south of 80k streams. If the song plays a prominent role in the new season, it’ll be interesting to see how those numbers climb.
It’s an intriguing choice, especially since the song predates the show’s 1980s setting, unlike the previously featured tracks. The use of a '70s epic could hint at a shift in timeline for the new season or just an emotional swing from the music supervisors. Either way, the nearly 10-minute prog ballad brings a dramatic, slow-burning energy to what’s shaping up to potentially be the show’s most intense chapter yet.
