Spotify may terminate your account if you fail to verify your age

In the UK, Spotify users will have to verify they are over 18 to view certain "certain age restricted content," per the recent enactment of the Online Safety Act. While the legislation largely focuses on adult content sites and social media, it applies to any service that may host material harmful to young people.

Users in the United Kingdom have already reported having pop-ups on the Spotify app requesting age verification. The streamer has partnered with Yoti, a digital identity verification company, to identify users who are the appropriate age to access certain content on Spotify, namely "music videos that are labeled as 18+ by rightsholders," the company says through its informational page.

Yoti offers a variety of ways to verify the user's age and ensures their data is safe. For Spotify, Yoti will ask you to scan your ID or scan your face, using a "facial age estimation." If you do not meet the age requirement – or look like you meet the age requirement – and can not confirm your age through other means, your account and library will be deleted. "If you cannot confirm you’re old enough to use Spotify, your account will be deactivated and eventually deleted," Spotify says.

Regarding safety, Spotify ensures that the data collected by Yoti is encrypted, and the biometric data collected by the company will be deleted after verification, and later used to improve its "ability to provide an age-appropriate experience to all of our users."
