Sonic Youth reopen Reverb Shop to sell off some band history

As three-fourths of the band reunite for "an hour of improvised instrumental noise" in New York City amid Kim Gordon's septuagenarian solo run, Sonic Youth have officially reopened their Reverb Shop, with Lee Ranaldo offering fans a chance to purchase a piece of the history.

After selling out their store the last time Ranaldo and company offered up their gear in 2022, Sonic Youth is set to offer up a new collection of pieces from the band's storied past to fans, players, and collectors alike. Included in the sale is one of Ranaldo's signature Fender guitars, multiple pedals, and even the musician's first guitar, a Hagstrom II, which was traded for his signature Fender Super Reverb amp that was used all over classic Sonic Youth compositions.

"At some point, when my first band, The Fluks, was playing, I needed an amp, and I traded this guitar and like $60 to my drummer at that time, David Linton's sister, who had a Super Reverb Amp," Ranaldo noted. "That became my first target amp, and basically set the precedent for exactly what I wanted to play out of the rest of my life… This was responsible for me getting the first one, and it came back to me recently through David's sister."

With a steady stream of post-breakup releases online, it's safe to say Sonic Youth is as popular as ever, with new scores of fans discovering the noisy godfathers with each passing year thanks to their very active Bandcamp release schedule. While a reunion of the core band members feels rather unlikely, fans new and old now have an opportunity to buy a piece of their sonic history, which can be admired, archived, and hopefully thrashed some more for years to come.
