On April 27, Death Row Records will release a new 21-track gospel compilation, Altar Call, executive produced by and featuring Snoop Dogg. Announcing the album via OkayPlayer earlier today, Snoop revealed that the project is a follow-up of sorts to his 2018 gospel album Bible of Love, and is dedicated to his mother Beverly Tate, who passed in 2021. He said:
“The spirit of my mother will forever live within me. This album is a reflection of what she has taught me to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world. Just another chapter out of the ‘Bible of Love.’"
Mixing traditional gospel with hip-hop, R&B, and modern soul influences, Altar Call features a large cast of gospel legends, relative newcomers, and Hollywood actor Jamie Foxx, who covers the Bill Withers' classic "Grandma's Hands".
The first single, dropping this Friday, will be album opener "Mother I Miss You", performed by gospel singer and pastor John P. Kee. In an accompanying press release, Kee says:
"I’ve known Snoop for a while. One of the things I’ve admired about him over the years has been his love for his mother. He has always honored her in such a way that inspired those that knew him personally to do the same! The amazing thing about this writing assignment was that I wanted to do something for the family during their time of bereavement. Look at God! He made a way for me to honor her by writing this song that definitely represents her love, reverence, honor, and care for her family! Mother Beverly, we will never forget you, Uncle John P Kee."
Besides Snoop, who features on "Brand New", the album includes contributions from Death Row Records artists Charlie Bereal, Jane Handcock, and October London, as well as the likes of Robert Glasper and Jazze Pha.
