The dubstep juggernaut is set to return to the iconic Miami EDM festival for the first time since 2015. Ultra Music Festival reached out to Skrillex to celebrate his 38th birthday, to which he replied "See you in March."
Even though the DJ has not performed solo at Ultra for some time, this ten-year drought has not gone entirely Skrillex-free. In 2019, the fest saw him and Boys Noize erupt under their collaborative Dog Blood alias to promote their then-upcoming Turn Off The Lights EP. His last solo effort for Ultra Miami stands as one of the most viewed performances in the festival's history, standing at a staggering 91 million views.
Despite the inferences on Twitter, the festival lineup does not mention (or possibly has yet to mention) Skrillex on the bill. It does, however, include one of the DJ's most frequent collaborators as of late: Four Tet, the UK's indietronica darling. The two have performed countless times around and following the release of Skrillex's two 2023 projects, even as a makeshift headliner for Coachella alongside Fred Again following the Frank Ocean fiasco.
The Ultra announcement was not the only teaser Skrillex got up to on his birthday. A few minutes after the Tweet, Skrillex put out a cryptic post reading "If you like my music leave me your email at: skrillex.com/FUS and I'll send you some things," signed under his name of Sonny Moore.
This isn't Skrillex's first cryptic anagrammed post. Fans remember after the release of his 2023 records Quest for Fire and Don't Get Too Close Moore alluded to two more albums: "SKRLX" and "CONTRA." Those projects have yet to come out; Skrillex is known for having heaps of unreleased music in his catalog.
Since this ten-year period, Skrillex has gained a newfound wealth of respect in the music and production world, with credits ranging from Bladee to Beyonce. This potential performance will not just be a nostalgic reminder of the DJ's greatness, but also show his development as a producer. The artist has shown a lot of change over the last decade, even cutting the iconically long hairstyle he has been rocking since his days with From First to Last days in 2004. Whatever Moore is teasing will be new and groundbreaking, akin to what he did with his seminal Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.
