Seattle-based indie-rock trio Deep Sea Diver will follow up their 2020 debut Impossible Weight early next year, through a freshly inked partnership with Sub Pop Records. "This is such a huge moment for us," writes bandleader Jessica Dobson on Instagram, adding "to work with Sub Pop is a dream come true. We couldn't be more proud of everything."
To celebrate, the band have shared a new single, "Billboard Heart", described by Dobson in a press release as "a song that felt like a strange transmission, a new emotion, and a spirit-filled dream when it came." She added:
"It is my nod to the simplicity of my favorite Tom Petty songs and to my love for Wim Wenders’ film Paris, Texas. The feeling of standing in the lonesome desert, embracing every particle of yourself, even the ones that are hard to look at, and fighting for your spirit to move through this world without entanglement. It is about being present and embracing the future while wholeheartedly letting go of any amount of control that I think I have in this life. ‘Billboard Heart’ is both a longing for something that may not exist and a place where I can be free.”
The accompanying video was co-directed by the same team behind the video for the Sharon van Etten-featuring "Impossible Weight" – namely Dobson and Peter Mansen with cinematographer Tyler Kalberg. Watch it below:
Musicians joining Dobson and her Deep Sea Diver bandmates, Mansen and Elliot Jackson, include Yuuki Matthews on bass, Adam Schatz on additional synths, and Greg Leisz on steel guitar.
Earlier this month, Deep Sea Diver contributed a cover of Yo La Tango's "Stockholm Syndrome" to a new benefit compilation supporting US gun safety organisation Everytown for Gun Safety.
