Not even a week after Shohei Ohtani's latest baseball milestone, SASAMI swings for the fences herself on new single "Slugger". The song accompanies the announcement of her new album Blood On The Silver Screen.
The album arrives on March 7, 2025 via Domino. Watch the macabre video for "Slugger" below:
SASAMI – the project of songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Sasami Ashworth – hasn't been shy about exploring the musical extremes. Her self-titled debut was a gauzy, introspective indie rock gem, whereas on second LP Squeeze she pulled a 180 on the subtlety department, gleefully depicting the Nure-onna, a vampiric snake-like Japanese folk deity, on the cover, and serving up a fragmented buffet of roots rock, nu-metal, and noise rock. SASAMI previewed her new direction earlier this year with the bombastic "Honeycrash".
On Blood On The Silver Screen, Ashworth has fully embraced her pop sensibility, working alongside Jenn Decilveo and Rostam to produce songs that viscerally capture a different thread of love, sex, power, and embodiment. “This album is all about learning and respecting the craft of pop songwriting, about relenting to illogical passion, obsession, and guiltless pleasure," says Ashwroth. "It’s about leaning into the chaos of romance and sweeping devotion—romanticism to the point of self-destruction.”
Though Blood On The Silver Screen offers a more mainstream friendly side, SASAMI is still insistent in carving out her own lane of inspirations, notably Lady Gaga's Born This Way, Kelly Clarkson, and other luminaries of mid-aughts pop. These sounds have become a prism for SASAMI to break free from repressive and restrictive definitions: “This album for me is about having deep, meaningful relationships within a new definition of what is good, what is right, and what is powerful ... We are still passionate beings.”
