Rival Consoles previews ninth album with new piece "Gaivotas"

Prolific British producer Ryan Lee West is busy readying his ninth Rival Consoles album for future release through London-based label Erased Tapes. Today he shares the first taste of what's to come with "Gaivotas" – the Portuguese word for seagulls – which was written during a residency at Patch Point Studio in Lisbon last year.

West describes the piece in a statement on the Erased Tapes website as "one of the most intuitive things I have ever written," adding "The momentum that the piece establishes in the first breath pushes forward right until the very end and many of the ideas were created in a first-take moment that were exciting and liberating.”

The accompanying video was shot using local actors in Kyrgyzstan and follows a group of teenagers whose lives are turned upside down when one of them disappears. Director Vincent Duluc-David describes it as "somewhere between fiction and documentary" and "guided by the poetry of landscapes and encounters," adding:

"I like my movies to ask questions and invite reflection, allowing each viewer to create his or her interpretation. Is it a ghost story or a metaphor for coming-of-age? Is a character dead, or is it a rebirth? With this film, I wanted to capture the poetry of everyday life, following my intuition and letting the images and music flow freely. This project is instinctive and honest, driven by a creative impulse, seeking to make the unspeakable palpable and create an encounter between mystery and emotion.”

"Gaivotas" is West's first new music since last year's standalone singles "Coda" and Piano Day piece "Spirit Loop". Ahead of the new album, West has a short run of US dates coming up, including an appearance at Slingshot Festival in Durham, NC:

Before that, though, he's opening a select few dates for Reykjavík-based duo Kiasmos (Janus Rasmussen and Ólafur Arnalds), with whom he collaborated on 2009's 65/Milo. Those dates kick off tonight in London, and he will also join the band in Paris, Hamburg, and Berlin. Full list of European dates for Kiasmos below:
