Richard Ashcroft has been confirmed as the first support act for the Oasis reunion tour. He will make appearances with his longtime friends throughout the 17 dates in the UK and Ireland.
In a statement from The Guardian, the former The Verve frontman shared his excitement for the upcoming performances:
“As a fan from day one I was buzzing for many reasons when the news of Oasis’s return was announced. I can say with no exaggeration that the songwriting talent of Noel and Liam’s pure spirit as a lead singer helped to inspire me to create some of my best work. It was the perfection of 'Live Forever' that forced me to try and write my own. They dared to be great, made the dreams we had real and I will always remember those days with joy. Now it’s time to create more memories and I’m ready to bring it. See you next summer. Music is power.”
Ashcroft’s relationship with the Gallagher brothers dates back to 1993, when Oasis opened for The Verve on tour, who later did the same for Oasis. Additionally, Oasis wrote a dedication “to the genius of Richard Ashcroft” in the liner notes of their second album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory.
The “Bitter Sweet Symphony” band reunited for a third time between 2007 and 2009 and released one final album titled Forth. Ashcroft found success in his solo career with hits such as “A Song for the Lovers” and “Money to Burn”. Moreover, his album Alone with Everybody reached No. 1 in the UK charts.
There's been some controversy with the election of support acts for not choosing "younger bands." Liam Gallagher has addressed the matter on his X account:
To all the folk who are crying about us not showing love to the young bands and not letting them support there’s LEVELS to this game and I’m afraid 99 p cent of ya are way off LFUCKING x
