RIAA announces top selling albums and singles of 2024

Today, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced the top-selling albums and singles of the year. The RIAA tracks music sales and streams, and assigns the coveted gold, platinum, and diamond certifications to albums and singles.

16 albums and 69 singles released in 2024 became RIAA-certified. The top-performing album of the year, according to the RIAA's metrics, was Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, which is now certified 6x platinum. Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" was the top performing single and is now certified 5x platinum.

For pop fans, this should come as no surprise. This week, Swift's The Tortured Poets Department spent its 17th week at number one on the Billboard 200 after the deluxe Anthology edition was released on CD and vinyl. "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" tied Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" for the longest-running number-one song of all time.

Sabrina Carpenter's Short 'n Sweet was the only other album from 2024 to receive multi-platinum certification. Ariana Grande's Eternal Sunshine, Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard And Soft, Future & Metro Boomin's We Don't Trust You, and Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday 2 were 2024's only albums to receive platinum certification.

Other highlights from the RIAA's recent certifications include: a much-deserved gold certification for Alvvays' "Archie, Marry Me," long-overdue platinum certifications for OutKast favorites "Roses" and "Rosa Parks," and diamond certification for Nirvana's game-changing "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
