As they explain on their “About Us” section, Record Store Day “was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally.”

Although RSD is only held once a year, on 12 April, “the organization works with both independent and major labels throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight the benefits of supporting these independent, locally owned stores with music purchases throughout the year,” which is why, in 2010, the first RSD Black Friday was born.

For this year's RSD Black Friday, which takes place on 29 November, there are more than 150 releases from a wide variety of artists available in different formats. That's why we've picked a handful of releases from the list (with a particular focus on acts that Anthony has reviewed or talked about in the past) to highlight, so you don't feel totally lost as to where to start looking:

This RSD Black Friday reissue single was cut from the original US version of the master tapes – the same masters as used for the albums in the 1964 box set. RSD First release limited to 10,000 copies.

Available on Blue Jay color vinyl featuring the full deluxe tracklist across each side of the LP. Originally a surprise release in November 2019 between his third and fourth albums. RSD Exclusive limited to 6,000 copies.

Joni Mitchell, Hejira Demos

Legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has been steadily releasing box sets of material from across her discography, including reissues of whole albums as well as massive collections of demos, outtakes, b-sides, and live cuts. This RSD exclusive release of the Hejira Demos is taken out from the larger Vol. 4 box set, but will now stand alone as its own release on 180g black vinyl. It includes demos for not only most of the songs that wound up on Hejira, but also cuts like "Talk to Me" and "Dreamland" that would be saved for Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. Intriguingly, the demo version of "Black Crow" features Chaka Khan on background vocals. Limited to 5000 copies.

Modest Mouse, Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again

The experimental black metal outfit Sunn O))) is putting out an exclusive double colored LP of their fifth album, Black One. Yes, Fragile Outtakes
