Kendrick Lamar recently surprise-released his sixth album GNX, the second track, “squabble up”, received a new Calmatic-directed music video yesterday (25 November). Among other references to West Coast Culture, the set and photography pay homage to The Roots’ 1999 video for “The Next Movement”.
The band’s drummer, Questlove, noticed the video and posted a screenshot of both clips on his Instagram account, where he wrote a great message.
Most of it, is about an eye-opening encounter he had with a younger fan in Germany that made him reflect on his perception as a celebrity and the reference points people know him from.
After that, he expresses his gratitude over Lamar’s “squabble up” clip, “I wanna thank @kendricklamar for acknowledging something I thought noone saw or cared about. Feeling seen is a great feeling and I dont take it for granted.”
He also reignites conversation about The Roots’ long-awaited comeback album, End Game, announced in 2016, their 17th LP overall, and first since 2014’s ...and then you shoot your cousin. For the past 15 years, The Philladelphia-based ensemble has operated as the official house band of the Late Night and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
“My number one love is the music I create in @TheRoots —that is the fuel to my fire & sometimes if you love something you must set it free. Then if it returns to you it’s real,”Questlove says on his post. “Yup, new album still coming lol.”
In August, on his Questlove Supreme podcast, he talked about the upcoming album, “I know the exact date when I want to release it, and it’s not 2024. But it’s a very seminal 2025 date that will make sense once it comes out.”
