Prince's estate announces controversial Netflix documentary will not be released

Netflix has canceled an upcoming controversial documentary about the late music icon Prince. The six-part documentary was supposed to be directed by Ezra Edelman, most known for his work on the "O.J.: Made in America" documentary. Prince's estate are now free to develop a documentary that features content from his archives. Furthermore, with now-complete access to Prince's vault, the estate could release much of his unreleased work. A co-manager of Prince Legacy LLC, Londell McMillan, said, “the vault is free. It’s a big, big win for Prince’s legacy.”

The estate made an official comment about the documentary on social media, saying, “The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released."

The controversy behind the scrapped documentary has a lot of moving parts. A deal was put in place for Edelman to be given access to Prince's archives, and the documentary was supposed to be only six hours long. Edelman then made the documentary into nine hours, which violated the agreement and could have enabled Prince's estate to withhold his music rights.

There were also certain details of his life being included in the documentary the estate didn't agree with. Those who saw the screening of the film had problems with inaccuracies, and felt it didn't give proper insight into his life. They also had issues with the documentary showing coroner's photos.

McMillan wants to make a documentary about Prince, and wants it to be “an in-depth piece that explores the complexities of the brilliant musical genius.” McMillan said there could be several documentaries about Prince that could release in the future.
