Prince documentary director calls Netflix "misguided" for shelving 9-hour series

As reported previously, a detailed documentary focusing on the life of Prince was recently shelved by Netflix. The nine-hour film was met with enthusiasm from Prince's family, but the reaction from fans and director Ezra Edelman was markedly different.

In a recent interview on Pablo Torre Finds Out, Edelman criticized the decision to cancel the documentary, labeling the move as misguided. He ultimately claims their concerns were rooted in protecting their financial interests rather than honoring the artist's memory.

“It’s a joke. This is the thing I just find galling. Like, I can’t get past this — like, the short-sightedness of a group of people whose interest is their own bottom line. They’re afraid of his humanity.”

Edelman further revealed that Prince's estate sought to alter specific aspects of the documentary after reviewing an early draft. Those elements included contentious issues regarding Prince’s personal relationships and lyrics. Edelman indicated that he had no intention of presenting a version of events that lacked factual integrity.

He articulated his disappointment with Netflix for conceding to the estate's demands, emphasizing the significance of the film as a comprehensive exploration of Prince's artistry and complex persona. Edelman described his documentary as a significant work, aiming to illuminate various facets of Prince’s life, including both his creative brilliance and the challenges he faced as an individual.

“This is a gift — a nine-hour treatment about an artist that was, by the way, f*cking brilliant. Everything about who you believe he is is in this movie. You get to bathe in his genius… People had issues with how he treated people — he was emotionally abusive, he was physically abusive.”
