Patti Smith to release new memoir 'Bread of Angels' in November

Patti Smith has announced a new memoir, Bread of Angels, for release on 4 November via publisher Random House.

Filling in some of the gaps of her story not fully explored in her previous memoirs – 2010's award-winning Just Kids, 2015's M Train, and 2019's Year of the Monkey – the book will reportedly touch on her childhood growing up in working-class Philadelphia and South Jersey, as well as her life as a wife and mother.

The release date is particularly meaningful for Smith, as it is both the birthday of her great friend Robert Mapplethorpe (the subject of Just Kids) and the death of her beloved husband, Fred 'Sonic' Smith of MC5.

A synopsis for the 272-page book provided by Random House describes it as "radiant" and "the most intimate" of her memoirs:

In a statement of her own, Smith says it took her a decade to write the book, "grappling with the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime," adding "I'm hoping that people will find something they need."

It's an incredibly busy year for Smith, as her Correspondences sound-poetry project with Soundwalk Collective heads to Asia for the first time, opening at the Piknic gallery in Seoul, South Korea, this coming Saturday (19 April), and at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo the following weekend (26 April). While in Japan, Smith will also perform with Soundwalk Collective in Kyoto and Tokyo.
