British singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Patrick Wolf is back with his first new full-length album in 13 years. Crying The Neck is out April 25 via APPORT/Virgin Music.
With this news comes first single "Dies Irae", which you can listen to here:
The title of the song comes from Latin and translates to "the day of wrath," and sees Wolf trying to write a "response" to that idea, adding he sees it also as a "day of separation from the living." Wolf says:
"[The title is] an affirmation of life in the last days of knowing you are about to lose someone you love, and a courageous - almost rebellious - choice against the misery to use the time remaining to deepen your love or joy with each other ... [I wrote it] to give myself another day I didn't have with my mother during her rapid descent in illness."
Wolf returned to music in 2023 with a brand new EP, The Night Safari, which was inspired by his struggles with addiction, crisis, bankruptcy, recovery and survival. Now, Crying the Neck is Wolf's navigation through the transformative effects of grief at the death of his mother, rehabilitation, local folklore, and the East Kentish landscape.
Crying the Neck is Wolf's first album since 2012's Sundark and Riverlight, which was itself a compilation of self-covers, where Wolf rerecorded songs from across his career, often in very different musical permutations. His last album of original, new material was 2011's Lupercalia.
The new record – reportedly the first in a planned four-album series – largely sees Wolf go back to some of his oldest tools, including the viola, the Appalachian dulcimer, baritone ukulele, kantale, and "the Atari he used to program as a teenager," according to a press release.
Wolf will also be out on tour through the UK and Europe to support the LP, with North American dates promised to come down the pipe.
