In the 5 years since Hildur Guðnadóttir's award-winning soundtracks for HBO's unsettling limited series Chernobyl and Todd Phillips' Joker, the Oscar-winning Icelandic cellist and composer has become one of the most sought-after film scorers in the world. She's since worked on the Cate Blanchett vehicle TÁR, Sarah Polley's Women Talking, and Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot mystery A Haunting in Venice, and will provide the music for director Nia DaCosta's upcoming adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen play Hedda Gabler.
But first there's the matter of the Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker: Folie à Deux, the score to which releases on 27 September via WaterTower Music. While details of the film's "other" soundtrack remain sparse ahead of the film's release on 4 October, Guðnadóttir's score has already won Folie à Deux its first award. The jury of the Soundtrack Stars Award at the 81st Venice Film Festival handed the prize to her over the weekend, joining the ranks of previous winners including Ennio Morricone, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Giorgio Moroder.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last September, Guðnadóttir explained that she didn't feel any pressure to repeat the success of the Joker score with Folie à Deux, saying:
“I just don’t think it’s helpful to the creative process to try and imagine how much people are going to love this or hate this, especially today. People’s opinions are somehow very strong these days. Either people really love something or they really hate something… So you just have to engage as little as possible with the internet and try to focus on doing your best in a way that you find most interesting. And then you just hope that the internet is not going to slaughter you.”
Well, internet, over to you. Listen to "There is No Joker" below:
