Oliver Tree killed in helicopter crash in Brazil

American singer Oliver Tree has been named as one of six fatalities in a two-helicopter crash in southwest Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

As confirmed by the Civic Police of Rio, five of the fatalities (including Tree) were in one helicopter, whilst the sole fatality in the other helicopter was the pilot.

With over 20 million followers across his social media platforms and 11 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Tree first went viral in 2017 with his song "When I’m Down," before releasing Ugly is Beautiful, his debut studio album, in 2020.

Born in Santa Cruz, California, in 1993, he began playing piano as a child and started writing songs early. By the time he started studying business at San Francisco State University, he had already started releasing music under the name Tree.

His final Instagram post showed him spending 24 hours in Brazil, posted just a day before his death.

By the time he was 20, he had released his first EP, Demons, including a cover of "Karma Police" that won the praise of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. He had just embarked on his Love You Madly Hate You Badly world tour, having performed in São Paulo just 8 days before he died. He was scheduled to begin the European leg on July 1st with a performance in Lisbon.
