NSYNC’s JC Chasez working on Frankenstein-themed concept album

Halloween is just around the corner. Costume stores are popping up on every block, candy corn is back on the shelves, and NSYNC’s JC Chasez has emerged from his lab to announce a Frankenstein-themed concept album.

Together with award-winning composer Jimmy Harry, Chasez is crafting his first musical theater concept album, titled Playing With Fire - the singer's first full release since his debut LP, Schizophrenic, in 2004. The project seeks to resurrect Romantic-era music by mixing it up with electro-pop, modernizing the sound for the stage. Chasez will also be joined by singers Cardamon Rozzi and Lily Elise to help give new life to the old story on which their project is based.

The singer spoke to Billboard last year about his interest in musical theater, considering it one of the few writing avenues he’s yet to fully explore:

“It’s kind of like the last thing that I haven’t really dabbled in. I started in television, then I moved into music and I made a couple of films. Now, it feels like this is the last untapped thing. It’s nice to experience all sides of it.”

Co-creator Jimmy Harry credits his late mother, Barbara Field, for the Frankenstein-adaptation on which Playing With Fire is based. Harry’s song “Masterpiece” for the film W.E. won the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, as JC Chasez himself was nominated for two Grammy Awards through *NSYNC (Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Music of My Heart” and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You”).

Harry and Chasez have teamed up in the past on pop singles released prior to the singer’s departure from Jive Records in 2007. Since then, Chasez has collaborated with everyone from Smokey Robinson to 3OH!3 and Blues Traveler to Meow Mix brand catfood. Playing With Fire is not JC’s first true foray into musical theater altogether, though it will be his first written work for the stage. In 2014, he played the role of Pontius Pilate in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar (with that particular production itself having had an almost Frankenstein’s-monster of a cast, including Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, Brandon Boyd of Incubus, and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child)
