It was announced at D23 that Nine Inch Nails will provide the score for Disney's upcoming film Tron: Ares.
Attendees were shown a trailer for the film starring Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman and Morbius star, Oscar-winner Jared Leto. Disney shared a video of a short video revealing the Nine Inch Nails logo beneath the film's title, with a short snippet of what seems to be early work from the score.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have previously collaborated on films such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Mank, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. They also took home Oscars for their work on The Social Network and Soul, another Disney film.
This will be their first project using the Nine Inch Nails name since 2020 Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts. It is unknown if they will be joined by other members of the band, past or present. It's possible that this is just Reznor and Ross, like their other scores.
Reznor formed Nine Inch Nails in 1988 and has remained the only permanent fixture until 2016 when Ross was made an official member.
This is far from the first time a full band has ventured into film composing. Queen famously provided music for 1980's Flash Gordon, while Toto infamously did the score for Dune (the Lynch version). Most notable, perhaps, is Daft Punk's Grammy-nominated score for 2010's Tron: Legacy.
Joachim Rønning's Tron: Ares is set to release October 10th, 2025.
