In January of this year, amid the Saltburn-inspired "Murder on the Dancefloor" resurgence, the song's co-writer Gregg Alexander revealed that the track had originally been earmarked for his own band. "It was gonna be New Radicals’ bawdy first single until I came up with ‘You Get What You Give’," he told Variety, adding that he'd written the music "in my old Mustang in the ’90s, pissed my car broke down."

Some weeks later, Alexander shared a snippet of the New Radicals demo with some of the original lyrics that, thankfully, were discarded for the Sophie Ellis-Bextor classic. With today's release, you can now hear that demo in full, alongside another New Radicals demo for the Oscar-nominated "Lost Stars", originally written for the movie Begin Again and recorded by Maroon 5's Adam Levine for the soundtrack.

Listen to both tracks below:

If you're wondering why release these demos now, the answer has everything to do with Kamala Harris's husband Doug Emhoff, who's a massive fan of "You Get What You Give". Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.
