White Rabbit has acquired world rights to Songs in the Key of MP3: The New Icons of the Internet Age by Liam Inscoe-Jones, a book that explores the last decade of music through the lens of five key artists: Earl Sweatshirt, SOPHIE, Devonté Hynes (AKA Blood Orange), FKA Twigs, and Oneohtrix Point Never.
These artists were once regarded as outsiders, but today, their influence and pop culture relevance are undeniable. SOPHIE's revolutionary sound echoes throughout much of contemporary electronic music, including Charli XCX's 2024-defining album Brat, while Earl Sweatshirt’s standout verse on El Cousteau’s track “Words2LiveBy” and FKA Twigs' entrancing music video for "Eusexua" made waves on social media this past month. OPN and Hynes' creative influence has permeated throughout the music industry, as well, as both have collaborated with many different major artists over the past few years, such as The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky.
Inscoe-Jones recognizes this profound influence, stating:
"When I was a teenager I vividly remember having my mind blown to the music of FKA twigs, SOPHIE and Earl Sweatshirt and feeling like I must surely be living through a kind of golden age. I realise that all teenagers probably feel like that but, whatever, I’m an adult now, and I still feel the same way. Among the relentlessness and immediacy of culture in the Internet Age, I truly believe a new wave of artists working at the threshold between mainstream and the avant garde were making brilliant, timeless music as deserving of full-length writing as the well-trodden sixties, and over-done seventies."
The book is a unique blend of criticism and music history, featuring interviews with notable collaborators such as Caroline Polachek, Daniel Lopatin, and Nicolás Jaar.
Songs in the Key of MP3 will be published by White Rabbit on 13 March 2025, available in trade paperback, ebook, and audio formats.
