Singer, songwriter, and producer Neko Case has announced Neon Grey Midnight Green, her brand new album, out September 26 via ANTI-. The followup to 2018's Hell-On (and her eighth solo record overall) was produced by Case and recorded at her own Vermont studio, with additional work completed in Denver with the PlainsSong Chamber Orchestra, and in Portland with Tucker Martine.
To commemorate the news, Case has revealed first single, "Wreck". Listen below:
On releasing her first self-produced record, Case (who identifies as gender-fluid herself, using she/her pronouns) says:
"There are so few producers who are women, nonbinary, or trans. People don’t think of us as an option. I’m proud to say I produced this record. It is my vision. It is my veto power. It is my taste."
Writing about the record in a post on Instagram, she expands:
"This is what I do and who I am and I'm so thrilled to have a new record ready to go. Many talented collaborators (musicians, artists, techs, conductors, partners, friends, my record company [ANTI-]) and I worked very hard on it and threw our whole souls in. This album is for and about musicians, it is a love letter and a testimony. We are valuable. And our connection to YOU, that we make together, is world building and sublimely devestating in its power. We, us together, are what make new pathways and change our minds and our hearts and the world."
Though it has been seven years since her last LP, Case has had a busy time recently. She released her debut memoir, The Harder I Fight, the More I Love You earlier this year, hitting #5 on the nonfiction New York Times Bestsellers List. She has also been working on the original music for the in-the-works Broadway adaptation of the classic 1991 film Thelma & Louise.
