The venerable Neil Young is gearing up to release a new live soundtrack titled Coastal: The Soundtrack, which is set to drop on April 18 through Reprise Records. The release is a live recording that acts as a companion to Young's documentary film, shot during his Coastal 2023 solo tour.
The soundtrack will consist of 11 tracks sourced from Young's extensive six-decade long career, with live recordings capturing the performances. Young contributes vocals and plays various instruments on the release including piano, guitars, and harmonica throughout the album.
Young says:
“It is in mastering now to make the vinyl, CD and digital copies. I am very happy and relieved to have this done in the short time it took. The album art has been completed and handed in with Jenice Heo. I am working on the lyric sheets now, hoping to hand-write the words and get them in, in time…”
The press release described it as an intimate live recording, as the album was made during a time when many were emerging from lockdowns imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The sessions were conducted in multiple cities, which brings some variation to the recordings.
Accompanied by the documentary which will have its theatrical release on April 17, Coastal gives viewers a personal, behind-the-scenes look into Young’s life during the 2023 tour. The film was directed by Daryl Hannah (Young’s wife).

The ‘Coastal’ soundtrack track listing is:
