mui zyu remakes five tracks from her recent album in Cantonese on new 'tasting menu' EP

British-Hong Kong artist Eva Liu follows up her recent mui zyu album nothing or something to die for with a “Cantonese tasting menu” addendum featuring five tracks from the record reworked and re-recorded in Cantonese. Working with her dad in Hong Kong, as well as Emma Lee Moss (formerly Emmy the Great, now recording under the name of lei,e), Liu says her painstaking translations of the songs brought her closer to the material.

Writing in a press release, Liu says:

"i’ve always been in awe of musicians who re-record their work in more than one language (for example the legendary Teresa Teng who sang in Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese !!). i feel a deeper connection to the songs after disassembling, dissecting and rebuilding the lyrics in Cantonese (thanks to the brains of Emma Lee Moss and my dad). most of the Cantonese language i know is through sweet melodies in song, not speech. deciding to re-record these songs was a way to chase and hopefully taste my cherished memories of listening to classic Canto-pop with my family growing up."

Listen to "冷靜如青瓜 (cool as a cucumber)" & "當娜喜歡寄生蟲 (donna likes parasites)" below, and seek out the rest of the EP – released today via Father/Daughter Records – on your favourite streaming platform.
