During her performance at the Jazz in the Gardens Music Festival in Miami this past Saturday, Ms. Lauryn Hill surprised the audience by bringing rapper Doechii on stage to perform “Doo Wop (That Thing).” Hill, known for her work with the Fugees as well as her seminal solo album, introduced Doechii to the crowd saying, “I want to introduce y’all to another sistah.”
Both Hill and Doechii are part of a select group of women who have achieved Grammy wins for Best Rap Album, alongside Cardi B.
Doechii spoke on the moment:
“Thank you Miss Lauryn Hill. Thank you. My heart is so full. She is my hero. This is the greatest honor hip hop could give me. Praise God. My entire body is vibrating with joy right now. I’ll never forget this day! EVER! I never been so nervous in my life 😭 she is a QUEEN.”
Doechii had recently performed at the Grammys as part of the Best New Artist showcase, where her album Alligator Bites Never Heal received the award for Best Rap Album. She has since released two new singles, “Nosebleeds” and “Anxiety.”
Additionally, Lauryn Hill also joined in on the SNL 50th anniversary homecoming concert, performing alongside fellow Fugees member Wyclef Jean for a four-song set.
