In a new cover story interview with Rolling Stone, Chappell Roan has opened up about some of the incidents behind her recent complaints about fans not respecting her boundaries – including one person who grabbed and kissed her without consent while she was out celebrating a friend’s birthday last month, and another who called her father after finding his number online.
While coming under fire after raising the issue on social media, Roan revealed to journalist Brittany Spanos that she'd received private messages of support from many other women in the industry – most notably from Mitski, whose own frightening run-ins with stan culture almost led to her quitting music altogether in 2019.
In a part of the email seen by Rolling Stone, Mitski wrote:
“I just wanted to humbly welcome you to the shittiest exclusive club in the world, the club where strangers think you belong to them and they find and harass your family members.”
Others who have shown support to Roan include Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Katy Perry, MUNA, Lorde, Hayley Williams, and all three members of boygenius.
Over the weekend, MUNA shared their own statement on Instagram calling out excessively weird and invasive fan behaviour, including “cyberstalking, hackings, bullying other fans & our loved ones, plus spreading falsehoods about us and our loved ones for clout and attention online” that had been going on “for months.”
Even Beyoncé isn’t immune from the pressures of celebrity, telling GQ magazine in a rare interview that she prefers to avoid the spotlight between albums. "I only work on what liberates me," she said. "It is fame that can at times feel like prison. So, when you don’t see me on red carpets, and when I disappear until I have art to share, that’s why."
