Alt indie folk singer/songwriter Mirah is ending a 7-year album drought with Dedication. Out February 20 via Double Double Whammy and her own imprint Absolute Magnitude, the new record was recorded mostly in January 2025, and was performed with a backing band that included Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Jenn Wasner (Flock of Dimes, Wye Oak), and Andrew Maguire.
With the news comes the first official single, "After the Rain". Listen below:
Of the new song, Mirah offers:
"Turns out that I am the kind of person who can get almost nothing work-like done within the frame of a normal work-day but give me a week and I will write a whole album. I was at the house in San Gabriel and this song just flew out of me. It wouldn’t have flown out in between school drop off and school pick up, with a bunch of errands and e-mails to deal with in between. This song needed the mountains in the distance, the weird suburban quiet of the days, the familiar strangeness of sleeping in not my own bed, the not my life life. I find a lot of truth in times like that, when I am just listening to me. What a gift."
The new song follows last year's return single "Catch My Breath", which also appears on the record.
Dedication follows on the heels of a lot of life for Mirah. In 2018, she was six months pregnant with her first child when her father suddenly passed away, just as she was about to release and tour her last studio album. "My dad was truly my biggest fan," she says. “My entire musical education consisted of listening to records and singing along with my dad and the rest of my family."
She goes on:
"Experiencing the greatest grief of my life and the greatest joy of my life in such close proximity definitely contributed to the genesis of Dedication," Mirah says.”These are such big experiences; being present for a death, giving birth. Love and dedication and pain are inextricable parts of both. When you accompany bodies entering and bodies leaving you feel it, this tangible, physical portal."
The record started taking shape in May 2024, when Mirah had an "explosion of songs" while doing a mini songwriting residency at Andrew Maguire's studio in LA, giving her a short break from the routines of her life back home.
Currently, Mirah also has one tour date lined up at Providence Pop Fest on May 1.
