Michigan State Police: Newborn found at Electric Forest was born alive

A newborn discovered dead inside a portable restroom at this year's Electric Forest festival was born alive and was viable at birth, according to new findings released this week by Michigan State Police.

The infant's body was found on June 28, the final day of the four-day festival, inside a portable toilet in the 'Good Life' camping area at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan. The discovery was made by a sanitation worker performing routine maintenance. At the time, investigators said they could not determine whether the baby had been born on-site or abandoned at the festival.

Folling a preliminary autopsy, authorities have now confirmed the child was born alive. Investigators are still searching for the mother and believe that there are individuals with information who have yet to come forward.

"Investigators believe there are individuals with important information relevant to this case who may be reluctant to come forward," Michigan State Police said in a post on X, urging anyone with knowledge of the circumstances to contact investigators.

The FBI has now joined the investigation and announced Monday that it is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person responsible for the baby's death.

The investigation has been further complicated by online speculation. Shortly after news of the discovery spread, social media users began sharing unverified claims about potential suspects. One woman was falsely identified and reportedly subjected to online harassment before investigators interviewed her and determined she was not involved.

"We are confident that continued investigative efforts, combined with forensic science, will ultimately lead to the identification of the person responsible," police said in a statement.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Michigan State Police are asking anyone with information to submit a tip online or call 855-642-4847. Authorities note that anonymous tips are accepted.
