When Bikini Kill formed in Olympia, WA in 1990, it’s pretty safe to say that approval from city officials was not top of mind for the Kathleen Hanna-led riot grrrl pioneers. Fast forward 34 years, though, and that's exactly what they've got.
With the band in town to headline the Friday night of the city’s South Sound Block Party weekender, Olympia mayor Dontae Payne has taken the opportunity to declare August 23 as ‘Bikini Kill Day’. Recognising the band’s influence and the wider cultural importance of the riot grrrl movement, Payne will lead a ceremony in honour of the trio that will be livestreamed via Instagram.
Long-running Los Angeles punk band X will headline the Saturday night. The Exene Cervenka and John Doe-fronted quartet recently released their final album, Smoke & Fiction, after almost 50 years as a band.
