Prolific electronic musician and producer Matthew Herbert has shared a new soundtrack composed for Daniel Kokotajlo’s movie adaptation of folk horror novel Starve Acre, originally written by author Andrew Michael Hurley. The film premiered at last year’s BFI London Film Festival, and is released in UK cinemas today.
Set in rural Yorkshire, Starve Acre stars Matt Smith (Doctor Who, House of the Dragon) and Morfydd Clark (Galadriel in The Rings of Power) as a couple who “unwittingly allow dark and sinister forces into their home, awakening a long-dormant ancient evil rooted deep in the countryside,” and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 85%. Watch the trailer below:
Herbert’s score was created with the London Contemporary Orchestra and features the voice of Matt Smith on “Let Me In”, an interpretation of an English folk song dating back to the early 1900s. Folk and electronics duo Crewdson & Cevanne also contribute a version of the song.

Herbert has plenty of other projects in the works, including new entries into his foundational Parts series. Part 9 is released on 27 September, and lead track “Fallen”, co-written by and featuring Momoko Gill, is out now. Part 10 will follow later this year, and a full-length album to come next year.
Herbert has a few live shows coming up across Europe, and an appearance at the London Jazz Festival at the end of November:
09/12 Salzburg, Austria @ Jazzit
09/21 Paris, France @ Badaboum
09/27 Bologna, Italy @ Palazzo Re Enzo
11/24 London, UK @ The Jazz Café
