Margo Price has teamed up with her friend Billy Strings for new duet "Too Stoned to Cry", out today via Loma Vista Recordings. Written by fellow Nashville resident Andrew Combs, who recently released his sixth album Dream Pictures, the original track dates back to 2014 and was re-recorded by Combs in 2019.
Described in her latest Rawdoggin’ Reality newsletter as a "sad ass country song," Price says in a press release for "Too Stoned to Cry" that she's wanted to record her own version of the track "for years," adding:
"My buddy Beau Bedford and I had been in the studio together working on an Orville Peck track, and I asked him to produce this single for me. He put together a really great band – Beau and I, plus my husband Jeremy Ivey played acoustic, Aksel Coe on drums, Misa Arriaga on Bass, Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Joey McClellan on electric. Once we got Billy to add his guitar and singing, I knew this song was gonna be a special recording."
"Billy has persevered a lot in his short life and his story and dedication to the craft inspires me deeply," she writes on Substack. "His voice and delivery on this track absolutely blew me away and showcase his ability to sing and play country music with the best of them."

"Too Stoned to Cry" is Price's fifth new track of 2024, following the Orville Peck duet "You’re an Asshole, I Can’t Stand You (and I Want a Divorce)", covers of Elvis Costello ("Pump it Up") and Tom Petty ("Ways to be Wicked"), and Price original "Shelter Me", produced by T Bone Burnett.
According to her newsletter, Price already has several other new songs ready to go and has been working on a follow-up to last year's Strays "for some time now," promising to play a lot of them at her upcoming shows:
