Experimental pop outfit Mamalarky has previewed a new track from their upcoming LP Hex Key, which arrives April 11th 2025 via Epitaph. "Anhedonia" sounds like a noise pop take on David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust", paced by Livvy Bennett's sparkling vocal delivery and razor sharp guitar playing.
Listen below:
The inspiration behind "Anhedonia" isn't quite as bubbly as its musical outer shell suggests, as Bennett explains:
“‘Anhedonia’ is a song about feeling god awful. I was going through a really deep depression and not knowing what to do other than isolate myself from everyone. I didn’t want to put this song out because of how much I associate it with pain and getting completely stuck in it. I’m glad it’s on the record now, though. The most defining times come after being at the bottom of the pit, every day passing the same. At some point you look up and anhedonia has gone and you’re more hopeful than before.”
"Anhedonia" is the fourth single off of Hex Key, following "Nothing Lasts Forever", "Feels So Wrong" and "#1 Best Of All Time".
Messiness, impulse, and confusion run like a volatile bolt of energy through the songs, stretching their dynamics like silly putty and overcoming any mental and physical limitations. Bennet says of the album:
“A lot of this record is about reconciling with rage, finding a way to create something useful with it ... You can’t really talk yourself out of a feeling, but there’s always a good place to put them.”
