Ethel Cain expressed her views on revolutionary violence yesterday in a series of Instagram Reels, where she said, “‘violence is never the answer’ wrong. Sometimes it is.” This statement appears to be a continued reaction to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangioni last month.
Hayden Silas Anhedönia, who performs under the alias, Ethel Cain, began her statement with “#KillMoreCEOs” attached to a screenshot from former US Secretary of Labor and current UC Berkeley Professor Robert Reich, which decries how financial incentives from entities like Big Oil and the NRA have negatively influenced American politics.
Her post reads:
"#KillMoreCEOs "
A screenshot shared along with that reads:
"Big Oil buys off Congress. No action on climate. The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns. Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care. The list goes on and on. Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction."
In the following slide, she shared her own opinion, claiming that she isn’t trying to be “reactionary or ‘edgy’” but that she “genuinely means it.”
"not even trying to be reactionary or "edgy" or say this shit for shock value, i genuinely mean what i say. corporations giggle at protesting. why would anyone ever willingly come down off their throne that they've spent years building off the suffering of their fellow man? nobody is getting visited by the ghost of christmas future, no one is having a change of heart. it's simple, you make them fear for their lives and hit them in the only place they hurt or nothing will ever get done. i don't even see how that's an incredibly radical idea. it seems quite straightforward to me. "violence is never the answer" wrong. sometimes it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
Her final slide on the issue says,
“the world is burning and it’s very clear who’s holding the matches.”
Reactions online have been mixed. Some commenters on Twitter agree with her sentiment towards violence, while others have shared their disagreements.
Ethel Cain is also currently supporting her newest album, “Perverts,” which was released on January 8, 2025.
