Mac Miller's unreleased album, Balloonerism, was teased Saturday night at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, with a trailer suggesting the long-lost project will arrive “soon.”
The animated trailer played between sets from Sampha and Alchemist & Friends, leading to an image of Miller painted by artist Alim Smith, which he posted to Instagram in 2018, before simply displaying the word "soon." It also featured two unreleased Miller songs, “5 Dollar Pony Rides” and “The Song That Changed Everything." You can watch the trailer, in full, below:
Mac Miller tragically passed away in 2018 from an accidental overdose, just a month after the release of his Grammy-nominated album, Swimming. Since then, his estate has done an excellent job of preserving his music and legacy by carefully curating his posthumous releases. In 2020, Circles, his only posthumous album which was reportedly intended as an accompaniment to Swimming, was released to widespread critical acclaim. The following year, his 2014 mixtape Faces was made available on vinyl and streaming services for the first time.
In an era where many artists' posthumous releases are mishandled, with unfinished tracks or pieced-together verses that fail to honor the artist's creative intent, it’s refreshing to see how thoughtfully Mac Miller’s estate has handled his work. So, while little is known about the upcoming Balloonerism album, it's safe to assume that his estate will only move forward with its release if they believe it authentically captures Mac Miller's artistic vision.
