The long-awaited unreleased new full-length album from the late Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller has landed an official release date. The project, titled Balloonerism, which Miller worked on in 2013 and 2014, is set for a 17 January drop, via Mac Miller’s Estate. It will be his second posthumous studio release following 2020's Circles.
The album was unveiled for the first time on Saturday night (17 November) at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw, between Sampha's and Alchemist & Friends’ sets. The audience was shown an animated trailer that ended with the album’s cover art reveal, as well as confirmation that it was “coming soon.” Now, the Sam Mason-directed trailer, along with the release date, has been officially uploaded. Watch it below:
The LP reached advanced stages of production, though it was never finished. It laid the groundwork for what would end up being Miller's 2014 mixtape Faces (which was commercially released on streaming and vinyl in 2021.)
Reportedly, in a now-deleted reddit comment from E. Dan of ID Labs, a long-time producer and friend of Miller, he explained that "[...] pretty much all of the songs you all know as Balloonerism were made inside of a week stemming from what was basically jam sessions… he did indeed move on from it, took a few of the songs for Faces and never got back to it."
You can pre-save the album here. There are four different editions of the LP available to purchase on Miller's official website, including a cassette, a CD, a clear vinyl, and a deluxe one.
