Rhino Records will reissue Lykke Li’s desolate third album I Never Learn this November, and you can hear a previously unreleased track from it now. “Midnight Shining” arrived quietly on streaming platforms on Friday, but there’s no confirmation yet if more songs from the vaults will show up on a digital deluxe edition, as with Rhino’s 10th anniversary reissue of Li’s Wounded Rhymes in 2021. A new vinyl edition with the original tracklist has started to appear on record store websites.
Though a demo of the song leaked several years ago, “Midnight Shining” has never been officially available. According to the YouTube credits, the studio version is produced by Greg Kurstin, who also co-wrote the song and plays all of the instruments. Listen to it below:
In an Instagram post shared on Friday and captioned “ARE YOU HAPPY NOW," Li didn’t mention the release, instead continuing to tease a new era in the works. Last week she shared a short clip of what seems to be a new song on a post captioned "DON'T BE SAD I'M WORKING ON NEW MUSIC," following an earlier post saying she had “written some bangers and read a lot and kind of have abs again,” adding “GET READY FOR MY COMEBACK BITCHES.”
“Midnight Shining” is the fourth single release for Li so far this year, following a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” (recorded for Netflix movie Damsel) plus features on Abstract Crimewave’s “The Gambler” and Ben Böhmer’s “Hiding”, which Li says was based on a voice note she recorded while “trapped in a heatwave lockdown.” Listen to those below:
