Lucy Dacus sang at Zohran Mamdani's inauguration

You've got to be pretty special for Lucy Dacus to endorse you as a politician; when Obama included her band Boygenius's "Not Strong Enough" on his annual summer playlist she responded by calling him a war criminal on social media.

So it's a pretty big deal that the singer-songwriter performed the iconic political anthem "Bread and Roses" at Zohran Mamdani's inauguration ceremonies yesterday as mayor of New York City, widely considered a major surprise upset and the best news for American progressives in a long time. "Bread and Roses" has long been associated with women's suffrage and workers' rights, with lyrics drawn from James Oppenheim's 1911 poem of the same name. It's usually been covered by folksingers like Utah Phillips and Pete Seeger, but Phil Collins has done it as well.

Dacus' own group quoted it in their song "Stay Down".

You can watch footage of her performance below, accompanied by Sarah Goldstone on the Omnichord.
