A day after performing a surprise show in Washington Square Park, Lorde has officially released her newest single "What Was That".
Before the impromptu live park performance, the song was teased through a myriad of cryptic social posts and TikTok snippets. The noticeably lo-fi footage in the music video was taken from the live performance with shots of Lorde singing and walking across New York.

"What Was That" marks the New Zealand popstar's first piece of new music since her Charli xcx "Girl, So Confusing" remix last year, and her first piece of solo material since 2021's Solar Power. Lorde co-wrote the single with Jim-E Stack, who also served as a co-producer alongside Daniel Nigro. The single signifies a new era for the singer, echoing synthpop stylings similar to her 2018 chart-topper Melodrama.
Despite having the local police shut down her live debut due to unmanageable crowd size, "What Was That" was still played through a small speaker, and Lorde was dancing to the track with her fans (as seen in the music video). Lorde was also recently seen dancing and strutting with Charli xcx at Coachella earlier this month.
