British singer/songwriter Liz Lawrence has shared four new songs today, all from her upcoming fifth album. Dropping June 12 via Chrysalis Records, Vespers is starkly different from any of her previous recordings, reflecting not just the tragedy it was born out of but also the permanent rewiring of grief.
"It is dedicated to my beautiful sister Jessie and her too-short life,” Lawrence says in a press release that explains how a terrible accident in the summer of 2024 changed the family forever. "What followed was the most profoundly altering period of my life," she explains. "I learned about the beauty of the dying, the resilience of the living and the infinite fountain of love that sustains us."

Written over a three-week period around six months after her sister died, Vespers was recorded and finished late last summer with the express intention of not wanting to "dress it up." "As much as possible, I wanted a clear, unobstructed line between what I'm trying to say, what I'm recording, and what I am communicating to people who are listening to it," says Lawrence, adding:
"I wanted someone to be able to say to a friend who is grieving that they should listen to Vespers. I want people to come to this record. I want people to use this record. I want it to have purpose, to give comfort and catharsis.”
