Liz Harris of Grouper just announced her new album, Music for Two Films About Water, which contains two scores for short films by Tanja Engelberts and Takashi Makino. Each film explores water through varying themes utilizing instrumental layers to diversify the way the theme is portrayed. On the project, Harris creates a backdrop by incorporating layers of Wurlitzer, mellotron, and various field recordings.
“Untitled (from We Exhale),” originally originally composed for the documentary of the same name, is a haunting sonic portrait of the river itself. In the film, director Engelberts adopts the perspective of the waterway, charting how centuries of damming, artificial channeling, and industrial runoff transformed a vibrant natural ecosystem into a rigid hydraulic machine. The piece confronts a grim ecological reality: what does a poisoned river sound like when it exhales, and what remains of a landscape when human damage outlasts human history?
The second track, “Untitled (from Constellation),” serves as the sonic backdrop to Makino's multimedia project of the same name. Using abstract water imagery, Constellation investigates how fragmented memories coalesce into new meaning. Drawing inspiration from ancient celestial navigation, where observers projected stories onto the night sky, Harris centralizes the thematic landscape by creating an immersive space, prompting audiences to map their own connections between image and sound.
