La Sécurité return with new single “Bingo” and news of their second album

Three years on from their Polaris Prize-longlisted debut Stay Safe!, Montréal/Tiohtià:ke art-punk collective La Sécurité are back with a new single, “Bingo”. They've also announced a new record with the same name (plus exclamation point), coming June 12, via Mothland in North America and Bella Union in the rest of the world.

Listen to the new song below:

Named “Bingo” as a working title by the band’s Melissa Di Menna when saving the original instrumental demo, when they eventually got to the lyrics, Félix Bélisle (who co-produced and mixed the album) suggested that they write about the unsung lives of older people who are still young at heart, which in turn inspired the bingo-themed, animated video by director Philippe Beauséjour, who says:

“[The song’s] energy inspired in me the anxiety of the players leaving the hall with a big sum. It's like a light social activity evening that can turn into a frenetic obsession with combinations of letters and numbers, stimulated by repetitive movements, sugary drinks, and cigarettes. The numbered cards become calculated abstractions, and every word from the hosts, a prayer.”

With a bassline inspired by and in tribute to Death From Above 1979, “Bingo” is the third song to be released from the upcoming album, following the double A-side single “Ketchup” / “Detour”.

Working alongside Bélisle on the mixing and production of Bingo! was Emmanuel Éthier of the bands Corridor, Population II, and Chocolat, with recording sessions taking place live-off-the-floor using rate and vintage microphones and compressors.
