King Crimson manager says expecting a new album is “premature” but “recordings have taken place”

A week ago (July 7), Jakko Jakszyk, lead singer and second guitarist of King Crimson since 2013, casually revealed in an interview that the British prog-rock legends were working on a new album. However, he wasn’t sure when the project would see the light of day.

Following Jakszyk's remarks, David Singleton, co-founder of the DGM (Discipline Global Mobile) label with Robert Fripp, and manager of the band, has issued a statement on social media to clarify some details on the recent rumors.

He starts by citing a question the late Crimson drummer Bill Rieflin posed when asked about a studio recording with the last incarnation of King Crimson: “Why make a studio album? There are excellent live recordings of all the songs out there already.”

Singleton offers one possible answer: “an album the very sound of which no-one has ever heard before. A sound driven by the three drummers,” he continues, “And those drummers have now recorded studio versions of their parts – separately, so that there is perfect separation.”

A three-drummer ensemble has been part of the group’s live shows since 2013, which last performed in 2021 on the Music Is Our Friend tour, or what Fripp named the “Completion” tour. The current drummer line-up consists of Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison, and Jeremy Stacey.

“So there is the seed of a new recording. Whether it is an album, whether it sees the light of day, whether it is something else is unknown. As is the outcome of any creative process,” the producer and music engineer elaborates, clarifying Jakszyk's statements.

“So yes, recordings have taken place,” he reaffirms. “[...] Getting excited about the possibility of a new album, as has apparently been happening, is somewhat premature. Carts before horses,” he warns.
