Ahead of her appearance at this weekend's queer-forward Mighty Hoopla festival in London, Kate Nash is reinforcing her allyship with her trans audience with new track "GERM" that dropped this morning.
In a statement about the new song, Nash explained that the song is her response to the recent UK Supreme Court ruling that there are only two sexes and and that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. "Using feminism to erase the rights of others is inherently un-feminist," she says, pointing out that, once again, "trans people were excluded from the conversation," adding:
"I owe so much of myself to feminism. Tarnishing the most important ideology in my life by denying the existence of trans women is something I take very personally. Denying that trans people exist and having a personal desire to remove them from public spaces because it makes you uncomfortable to share spaces with trans people is transphobic. Dismantling systems of oppression lies at the very core of feminism. If you are transphobic therefore you are not a feminist. Welcome to your rebrand GERM."

Nash will play the new song live for the first time at Mighty Hoopla, where she'll be joined by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
