Earlier this week, Joyner Lucas hopped on Twitter to challenge fellow rapper Meek Mill to a battle.
On Wednesday, the "I'm Not Racist" rapper tweeted out: "Sometimes I low-key feel like I wanna get in the URL battle rap ring," referring to the Ultimate Rap League, one battle rap's most popular platforms.
Although URL doesn't often highlight recording artists, they quickly sprung to action, asking the rapper to name his opponent. Lucas responded by name-dropping a couple noteworthy battle rappers like Murda Mook and Arsonal, but then suggested that perhaps a fellow industry rapper would make for a better matchup:
βI low key wish i can go against one of my peers tho. Someone who ainβt seasoned in the ring already but lyrically fit. Butβ¦β¦ on the other hand, maybe going against a season vet is the fun part.β
He then responded to his own tweet saying "nobody is off the table. Wasup @MeekMill?"
The battle rap community quickly took this tweet and ran with it, arguing over who would win in a matchup between these two noteworthy artists or whether or not it was a battle they even wanted to see.
URL has over 1.5 Million YouTube subscribers and even more on their exclusive app. Although the rappers they feature usually aren't world-famous, artists such as Cassidy have graced their stage in the past, and those who attend their sold-out events might just see hip-hop legends such as Drake, Ghostface Killa and Busta Rhymes cheering alongside them. Remy Ma even started a battle rap league of her called Chrome 23.
In a statement to AllHipHop about the prospect of a Joyner Lucas vs. Meek Mill battle, the owners of URL said:
βFor the last year, hip-hop has been buzzing with a renewed competitive energy. Commercial artists have increasingly turned to URL as the ultimate stage for lyrical showdowns. If Joyner Lucas wants to challenge Meek Mill, weβre ready to make it happen.β
Meek Mill has yet to respond.
